the world is fun!

Jubilee's volunteer, Amy, shares her experience! Read on...

Our group is The World is Fun, a nonprofit Seattle organization that connects local volunteers and corporations with charities, providing fun and unique opportunities to donate to important causes. We're always looking for great group volunteer opportunities and Jubilee provides one of our favorite group experiences.

We have done 2 community dinners so far and it has been such a great experience that we're planning to do it once a month in the future. Cooking a meal together engages everyone - regardless of skill - and it's an excellent way to give back while sharing a great experience and getting to know others. Not only does it provide a good opportunity to meet fellow volunteers, everyone at Jubilee is also super friendly and in the end you get to sit down and enjoy your hard work!

If you don't have a group but would still like to volunteer for a community meal at Jubilee, we would love to have you volunteer with us!

welcoming summer

Jubilee welcomed the first day of summer with s'mores! Can you believe this weather? Thank you to our resident for the idea and for providing ingredients for residents and staff to take a little afternoon break.

meet joe woo

Friday, 11 June 2010 12:27

Meet Joe Woo. Joe comes to Jubilee every Monday morning with fresh bread donated by Essential Baking Company for our residents. He volunteers to make this weekly pickup because he wants to help offset the daily living costs that are often challenging for our residents. Just a few weeks after Joe began making the bread delivery, I was telling him how much our residents’ appreciate the fresh bread and he asked me a very simple question: “What else do you all need?” Since that day, Joe has asked me this question probably a dozen times. So now, along with bread, Joe has begun to bring other things for the house on a regular basis: vegetables, meat, dish soap, toilet paper. But he wasn’t interested in leaving it at that. He still asks me, “What else do you all need?”

Joe is now a Table Captain for our annual Benefit Breakfast coming up on October 7th. In just a few months, he has done so much for Jubilee; he has made deliveries of clothing from Take 2 Consignment, he’s introduced friends to Jubilee, he’s even made trips to the dump! Yesterday he told me that he’d like to be available on Mondays to “take a look at anything that might need to be fixed.” Joe is an ambassador for Jubilee and a handy man. His constant energy and enthusiasm for doing more is inspiring and uplifting and all stems from that simple question, “What else do you all need?” Thank you Joe, for bringing us what we need and much, much more!

congrats and thanks to St. Joe's 8th graders

Wednesday, 09 June 2010 10:52

Instilling community service to children is something that St. Joseph's School does very well, so it was only natural to extend an invitation to the St. Joe's 8th graders to provide community meals to Jubilee's residents. The generosity of the 25+ 8th graders and their families resulted in 6 community meals spread throughout the month. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the extra energy in the kitchen and the wonderful food the kids created. Everyone involved enjoyed the additional time spent with their friends, but also recognized the importance of simply providing and sharing a meal with the wonderful women at Jubilee.

Community meals can be provided by anyone and help to defray the expensive cost of food for the women. The majority of the women's income goes toward paying their very low monthly program fee, ranging from $150-$350 depending on income. Lots of great questions were asked during the tours and everyone was incredibly attentive to learn about the history of the center, as well as the importance of Jubilee's volunteers and community support.

With the St. Joe's 8th graders' combined 6 community meals, they provided over 200 individual meals for all 34 residents! That’s a lot of tacos, pulled pork, salads, beverages and desserts! Thank you graduating 8th grade students and parents. We hope many of you will remember Jubilee in the future and return with new friends, to share another meal with the incredible ladies of Jubilee. Congratulations!
